What does FPT stand for?
FPT stands for Focal Psychodynamic Therapy. This approach is classified as a depth psychology-oriented psychotherapy. It focuses on a clearly defined treatment goal over a limited number of sessions, rather than delving extensively into all areas of life over a long period.
In Germany, FPT is primarily used in outpatient treatment for adult women with anorexia nervosa. The focus is on internal conflicts and relationship patterns related to disordered eating behavior and one’s relationship with one’s own body. The approach was examined, among other studies, in the German ANTOP study, a large comparative study on outpatient anorexia treatment.
Where Parents Come Across the Abbreviation
As parents, you’ll usually come across the abbreviation FPT in doctors’ letters, treatment plans, or hospital records. It always refers to Focal Psychodynamic Therapy, not a separate, distinct approach.
FPT can easily be confused with other abbreviations used in the treatment of eating disorders:
- CBT: Cognitive Behavioral Therapy focuses on specific thoughts, beliefs, and behaviors related to eating.
- FBT: Family-Based Therapy actively involves parents and is the standard approach for children and adolescents.
FPT is intended for adults and focuses more on the psychological underlying causes. For younger children, FPT is therefore rarely recommended; in these cases, family-based treatment is usually the primary focus. A child and adolescent psychiatrist (KJP) or a medical or psychotherapeutic specialist can determine which approach is best suited for your child.
